Some Updates into March

Well, the Valentines Day decorations are down and put away along with any remnants of winter-related snowflake decor and based on the weather forecast, Spring is starting to arrive!  Hurray!  A few things to note about our recent events:

1 - I went to the Urgency Room last Monday morning (similar to ER, but not at a hospital a.k.a. not as "emergency").  I woke up last Monday morning really dizzy and nauseous.  They told me I have Vertigo.  Strangest and yuckiest feeling in the world to be experiencing Vertigo.  So, last week was a lot of down time and trying to keep the Vertigo in check without having to take any meds (because they make me drowsy).  Anyway, then I followed up with my regular doctor on Wednesday last week because I was feeling concerned that I was still experiencing the dizziness and nausea.  She agrees with the Vertigo diagnosis.  So, I am hoping to start feeling more like myself soon!

2 - Ella got strep throat the last week of February (2/25 to be exact).  She finished her 10 days of antibiotics over the weekend and the VERY NEXT DAY started complaining of her throat hurting.  Then she was nauseous Sunday night, Monday morning and Monday night.  So, we went back to the doctor today and she still has strep throat.  Lovely.  We are doing another round of antibiotics for 10 days and fingers crossed it will work this time!

3 - Dance recital is fast approaching and we picked up Ella costume's a few weekends ago.  She is dancing to "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton for the tap routine and some random slow song for the ballet routine.  It is a small group this year so I hope it turns out great for both routines.  She is excited to perform on stage again!

4 - The kindergarteners celebrated Dr. Seuss Day last Monday.  Ella came home with all sorts of Seuss-related crafts and activity sheets.  She was super proud of her Cat and the Hat "hat" and her Elephant Hat (to be like Horton).  :)

5 - Ella has been practicing her writing skills, even keeping a little journal of sorts, which is super cute.  (She writes notes to her friends in there or things that she did that day, like "I ate chicken for lunch today")  HA!  Anyway, a few weeks ago she wanted to play Sheriff.  She asked me how to spell Sheriff for the badge she was making (because we have to be authentic!) Clearly I could use a spelling lesson on Sheriff.  :)

whoops!

6 - Last Friday the kindergarteners had a science day.  Ella brought home her science project and I have no idea what it is!  I asked her about it and thought it was hilarious that her answer was "It's Science"  Video!

Valentine's Day!

Happy belated Valentine's Day!  We had a great weekend.  It started off with Ella's Valentine's Party at school on Friday afternoon.  I was one of the volunteers so I wasn't able to catch any pictures of her party, but I know the kids had a blast!  She was pumped to bring home her bag o' Valentines! :)

This year's Valentine from Ella was....

I used the printable found here.  It was originally created for a Rainbow Loom bracelet,
but we found these adorable little heart stretchy figures and it worked great!

For her teacher and the teacher's assistant, we went with a cute idea

So cute! Ella was excited to share these Valentines

Saturday morning (the big day)....opening her Valentine gift from us...

(She was able to sound out all the words in the card - hurray!)

And, Ella made me this sweet valentine at school  :)
"Dear Mom, hope you are having a great time at work. Love, Ella"  HA!

I made my first batch of Cake Pops!  Whoot whoot!
They turned out really cute and taste amazing (really, they do!)
Ta da!  YUM!

Super Bowl weekending...

Happy February!  We had a good time this past weekend and spent time watching the Super Bowl and having yummy snacks!

Last week at school Ella presented her nursery rhyme - Humpty Dumpty.  :)  I grabbed a video at home to share.

She has been keeping busy with dance again this year.  Although, I am a bit concerned about the lack of progress on recital routines.  I'm hoping this week we'll see a big improvement, otherwise, I might have to start asking what the deal is!  We spend a lot of time and money for dance and (even though she's only 5) I want their routines at recital to reflect it!

She is getting excited for the Valentine's Party at school next Friday.  She is growing up so much!  She is reading books like crazy (CRAZY!) and seems to be doing well in Kindergarten. The days are going so fast!!

(who doesn't like a waffle with chocolate chips for a fun Sunday morning breakfast?!?)

Weekending....

Well, it has been 21 days since my last post.  Yikes!  January is almost through and I am looking forward to the warm-ish temperatures we are having for this January thaw!  Our month has been relatively low-key which may explain my lack of posts.  Weekends have been busy of random things, including a trip for Jay to Alexandria for a bachelor party, then a trip for Ella and I to Morris the following weekend for a bridal shower.  This weekend, Jay was at a Gopher's game, so Ella and I saw the movie Paddington and loved it!  I made a delicious berry cobbler to enjoy over the weekend -and it was a huge hit!  Seriously easy and super yummy!  Cherry Berry Cobbler.  Try it!!  Recipe here

Yesterday, I made a full turkey dinner.  Turkey, mashed potatoes, homemade bread and even cooked carrots (believe me, it was a LONG day in the kitchen).  But it was worth it and now we have some leftovers so I don't have to think about what we're going to eat for a few nights.  :)

Yesterday afternoon, Ella spent some time taking Jay to a ball where they danced the day away.  :)  She had a lot of fun but those dress-up heels are slippery on wood floors!!

This week at school, the kids are doing nursery rhyme presentations.  Ella has chosen Humpty Dumpty.  We finished her props and she practiced for us last night.  She will do great.  She had a fun time painting those props too!  Check back for a video of her presentation.  :)

Happy Monday!

Christmas on New Years!

Happy 2015!  We celebrated the Abbas Christmas on New Years Day and we hosted it this year!  Yikes!  It was a bit of prep work for me on New Years Eve, but we all had a good time and I think everything went pretty smoothly.  We did an Italian theme for the food, since everyone had already had their share of the holiday hams.  :)  I made homemade Italian meatball sliders using this recipe from The Pioneer Woman and they were super simple and delicious!  After the meatballs were done on the stove, I transferred them to a crockpot on low/warm until lunch was served.  Worked out perfectly!  I also made THREE pans of baked ziti.  We only ended up eating about one and 1/3 pans.  Lots of leftovers!  :)

I also made a new cake - Earthquake Cake - using this recipe.   My cake picture is below.  It was pretty good, but I was hoping it was going to knock the socks off of everyone.  It didn't really have that effect, but it was certainly tasty.  :)

There were lots of gifts to be opened by the little ones (Ella and Harrison)!

It was a fun day!

Weekending (post-Christmas style)....

Whew!  Happy 2015!!  We are hopeful for a wonderful year ahead.  This morning was a big wake up call - back to the routines people!!  I have a feeling this week will feel like a long one!  We had a good relaxing weekend.  Lots of time to snuggle in new blankets gifted to us and Ella had lots of time to enjoy her new toys!

Like singing karaoke on her new FROZEN karaoke machine....

Even singing duet with Dad!

And keeping warm in a super soft new robe WHILE singing karaoke!

And spending lots of time playing Sands Alive (a/k/a "squishy" sand)

I baked scratch cinnamon rolls using The Pioneer Woman's recipe!  Here is the link to the recipe.  I'm told the full recipe yields LOTS of rolls, so I halved it for my first attempt.  I was able to get 2 full pie pans plus 3 extra rolls.  :)  Here's a picture of my results - they were a yummy morning breakfast!
